Access rules
A resource may require checkout or be Open to all members. Open access still requires sign-in, active membership, and Membership Plan permission for that digital collection. It never makes the original file public.
Read or listen
Use Read now or Listen now when the active digital entitlement permits streaming. Libcodesk WebApp opens supported PDF, HTML, text, and audio formats in its protected reader or player. The Standalone app provides the same member workflow and can additionally keep eligible content available through its protected offline cache.
The document reader keeps your reading progress and offers light, dark, sepia, and high-contrast reading themes. The audio player remembers progress and provides playback speed, 15-second skip controls, and a 15, 30, 45, or 60-minute sleep timer. Close the reader normally so the latest progress can be saved.
Download appears only when the library has explicitly enabled member download for that resource. A Read or Listen action does not automatically mean that downloading is allowed.
Save offline securely
When allowed, the Standalone app stores a device-protected encrypted cache rather than a raw file in Downloads. The cache is tied to the member and active entitlement. It is removed after return, expiry, logout, account change, or loss of access. Temporary handoff files required by a device reader are cleaned after use or on the next app start.
Reading lists
Create or manage reading lists from My digital books. Adding or removing a list entry does not borrow, return, or delete the underlying digital entitlement.
Return early
Returning a checked-out digital resource ends the entitlement and revokes outstanding access links. Open-to-members entries do not present a return action because they are not normal checkouts.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |

| Reader or player does not open | Confirm the entitlement has not expired, refresh once, and try again. If it still fails, contact the library with the title and time of the attempt. |
| Progress did not resume | Reopen the title from My digital books. Progress is saved periodically and when playback is paused or the reader is closed normally. |
| Download is missing | The library has not enabled download for that resource. Use Read or Listen when available. |
| Offline copy disappeared | Protected offline access is removed after return, expiry, logout, account change, or loss of permission. |
Do And Don'ts
- Do close the reader or pause audio before leaving so recent progress can be recorded.
- Do use the sleep timer for long audio sessions.
- Don't share temporary access links; they are short-lived and tied to your account.
- Don't expect every digital format to support reading, listening, downloading, or offline access.
FAQ
Can I continue on another device?
Yes, when the entitlement remains active and the latest reading progress has been saved. Open the title from My digital books on the other device.
Why can I read a title but not download it?
Reading and downloading are separate library permissions. The library may allow protected reading while keeping file download disabled.
