Label Page Layouts

Page Layout controls how many labels are placed on one sheet or roll.

The label template controls what one label looks like. Page Layout controls where those labels sit on the paper. Printer Settings controls how the selected printer shifts, scales, or rotates the finished output. Keep these three parts matched before printing a full batch.

What Each Part Means

If the template size and page layout do not match the physical label stock, the PDF may look organized on screen but the printed labels can miss the sticker cells.

Sheet Labels

For A4 or Letter sheets, set:

  • Paper size
  • Rows and columns
  • Margins
  • Horizontal and vertical gaps
  • Start position for partially used sheets

Start position is helpful when a few labels have already been used on the first sheet.

Libcodesk does not shrink labels to force extra columns or rows onto a page. The label size, margins, and gaps stay in millimeters. If the requested row or column count cannot fit on the selected paper, only the positions that physically fit are used. This protects barcode, QR, and spine label size when changing between different label templates.

When Layouts Do Not Match

Mismatched layout settings usually show up in one of these ways:

Do not fix row drift by changing only the printer offset. Offset moves the whole output together. Drift usually means the layout gap, paper scale, or physical stock measurement is wrong.

Built-In And Custom Layouts

Use the built-in layout presets when you want a quick starting point for barcode sheets, spine labels, shelf labels, Letter sheets, or roll labels.

For common A4 barcode stock, Libcodesk includes a 30-up 66 x 27 mm layout with 3 columns, 10 rows, 3.2 mm top and bottom margins, 3.2 mm left margin, 2.8 mm right margin, 3 mm horizontal gaps, and 2.1 mm vertical gaps between labels.

After adjusting a layout for your label stock, save it as a custom layout template. The saved layout can be applied again later for reprints or another label list, so staff do not need to re-enter margins, gaps, rows, columns, and start position each time.

Custom layout templates can also be exported and imported. Use this when another workstation or another library branch uses the same label stock and needs the same page layout.

Roll Labels

For roll labels, choose the roll width that matches your printer, then test one label before printing the full batch.

The Standalone app is recommended for roll-label correction because it can use local printer settings where supported.

Safe Test Method

Before printing a full label batch:

  1. Choose the saved label list.
  2. Choose the label template that matches the sticker size.
  3. Choose the page layout that matches the physical sheet or roll.
  4. Generate one PDF or one test print.
  5. Print at 100% actual size; do not use fit-to-page or shrink-to-printable-area.
  6. Place the printed page behind one blank label sheet and hold it against light, or print on plain paper first and compare the marks with the label stock.
  7. Scan one barcode or QR code before printing the full batch.

If alignment is still wrong after checking template size and page layout, use Printer Settings in the Standalone app to correct the printer profile.

Do And Don'ts

Do

  • Use a built-in preset when it matches your label stock.
  • Keep one tested custom layout as the default for your most-used stock.
  • Print one test page after changing margins, gaps, orientation, template size, or printer profile.
  • Write down the exact label stock measurements if the packet does not provide them.

Don't

  • Do not print a large batch from a new layout without a test page.
  • Do not use browser or PDF viewer fit-to-page scaling for label sheets.
  • Do not change printer offset when only later rows or columns drift; check gaps first.
  • Do not assume A4 and Letter label sheets use the same margins.

FAQ

Why did Libcodesk print fewer labels than the rows and columns I entered?

Libcodesk keeps label size accurate. If the requested label size, margins, and gaps cannot physically fit on the selected paper, Libcodesk uses only the positions that fit instead of shrinking the barcode or artwork.

Should I change Page Layout or Printer Settings first?

Change Page Layout first when rows, columns, margins, gaps, or stock size are wrong. Use Printer Settings when the PDF is correct but one physical printer shifts the whole output.

Can I reuse a tested layout on another computer?

Yes. Export the custom page layout and import it on another Libcodesk setup. Still print one test page because printer drivers and feed behavior can differ by device.
