Access rules
A resource may require checkout or be Open to all members. Open access still requires sign-in, active membership, and Membership Plan permission for that digital collection. It never makes the original file public.
Read or listen
Use Read now or Listen now when the library has enabled reading for the title. In Libcodesk WebApp, an ebook also requires download permission before its built-in reader can open. When ebook reading is enabled but downloading is disabled, Read now remains visible, but selecting it tells the member to download the separate Libcodesk OPAC app and the browser reader does not open. This extra ebook rule does not change audio streaming. PDF and EPUB titles that meet the active permissions open inside the built-in reader. A centred loading message remains visible while the title is downloaded and its first page is prepared, so wait for the page to appear before using the reading controls. Supported audio opens in the built-in player where the device supports it. Other permitted formats may open in the device's usual app.
For PDF and EPUB, use the compact Scroll or Flip pages segmented control in the reader header. The selected mode is highlighted while both mode icons and labels remain visible, and you can switch it with Left Arrow, Right Arrow, Home, or End after focusing the control. The title stays centred while Back and the PDF page badge remain at the left and the compact reading controls remain at the right. On a narrow phone window, zoom and reading-layout controls stack into full-width rows so every action remains visible. For a PDF, the compact page badge shows the page or facing-page range currently in view and the document's total page count in both layouts. PDF titles also provide zoom out, zoom in, and the same keyboard-friendly dropdown style used elsewhere in the software. The compact dropdown keeps its current zoom value centred and offers percentage choices from 50% to 200%, Fit page width, and Fit whole page; its labels scale down inside the control when display text is enlarged so the complete option remains readable. Changing the PDF scale keeps you on the page you are reading, including after switching to Flip pages and back to Scroll, and the WebApp remembers the selected scale for the current browser session. On wider screens, Flip pages starts with page 1 centred by itself, then presents facing pages in reading order, such as 2–3 and 4–5. On narrow mobile screens, it presents one complete page at a time so content is not clipped; Previous and Next move one page at a time. Each turn uses a pre-rendered two-sided 3D sheet, spine-based fold, changing edge shadow, and depth so the beginning and end of the turn stay visually stable; your device's reduced-motion setting automatically replaces it with a simple page change. In page mode, use the visible Previous and Next controls beside or below the page, drag the page in the Standalone app, or use Left Arrow/Page Up and Right Arrow/Page Down on a keyboard. Press Escape to close the reader. Your position is saved while you read so you can resume from My digital books.
The audio player remembers progress and provides playback speed, 15-second skip controls, and a 15, 30, 45, or 60-minute sleep timer. Close the reader normally or pause audio before leaving so the latest progress can be saved.
Download appears only when the library has explicitly enabled member download for that resource. In Libcodesk WebApp, the browser starts the permitted file download. In the Standalone app, choose where to save the PDF or EPUB. Cancelling the save dialog does not remove your digital access. Download-only titles do not show Read now. In Libcodesk WebApp, ebooks configured for reading without download permission direct members to the separate Libcodesk OPAC app instead of opening the browser reader.
Save offline securely
When allowed, the Standalone app stores a device-protected encrypted cache rather than a raw file in Downloads. The cache is tied to the member and active entitlement. It is removed after return, expiry, logout, account change, or loss of access. Temporary handoff files required by a device reader are cleaned after use or on the next app start.
Reading lists
Create or manage reading lists from My digital books. Adding or removing a list entry does not borrow, return, or delete the underlying digital entitlement.
Return early
Returning a checked-out digital resource ends the entitlement and revokes outstanding access links. Open-to-members entries do not present a return action because they are not normal checkouts.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| WebApp asks you to download the OPAC client | The library enabled reading but not file download for the ebook. Install the separate Libcodesk OPAC app from the official download page, sign in, and open the title there. |
| Reader or player does not open | Confirm the required permissions are enabled and the entitlement has not expired, refresh once, and try again. If it still fails, contact the library with the title and time of the attempt. |
| PDF or EPUB reports that it cannot open | Try the title again once. If it still fails, tell the library which title and format failed; the library may need to replace an incomplete or unsupported file. |
| PDF text is too small or a page is cropped | Choose Fit page width for larger text with vertical scrolling, Fit whole page to see the complete page, or select a percentage that suits your screen. |
| Progress did not resume | Reopen the title from My digital books. Progress is saved periodically and when playback is paused or the reader is closed normally. |
| Download is missing | The library has not enabled download for that resource. Use Read or Listen when available. |
| Download did not save | Retry while signed in and choose a location where your device allows files to be saved. If the access has expired, reopen the title before downloading again. |
| Offline copy disappeared | Protected offline access is removed after return, expiry, logout, account change, or loss of permission. |
Do And Don'ts
- Do use the built-in reader's layout and PDF scale that are most comfortable for the title and your screen.
- Do close the reader or pause audio before leaving so recent progress can be recorded.
- Do use the sleep timer for long audio sessions.
- Don't share temporary access links; they are short-lived and tied to your account.
- Don't expect every digital format to support reading, listening, downloading, or offline access.
FAQ
Can I continue on another device?
Yes, when the entitlement remains active and the latest reading progress has been saved. Open the title from My digital books on the other device.
Why can I see Read now in WebApp but not open the ebook?
The library enabled reading but not file download for the ebook. Libcodesk keeps the reading action visible; selecting it asks you to download the separate Libcodesk OPAC app and open the title there.
